telegram Updates Policy to Allow Flagging of 'Illegal Content'

telegram has made a significant policy change that allows users to now report illegal content found in private chats for review by moderators. This update comes in the wake of the recent arrest of telegram CEO Pavel Durov in France on allegations related to criminal activity on the platform.

Prior to this policy shift, telegram's FAQ page explicitly stated that requests concerning private chats were not processed, emphasizing their secure and unmoderated nature. However, within the past day, this language has been silently removed, signaling a notable shift in their approach to moderation.

telegram Users Can Now Report Illegal Content

The updated FAQ now provides users with clear instructions on how to report illegal content through the app's 'Report' button. This new feature enables users to flag any content deemed illegal or inappropriate for the platform's moderators to review and take necessary actions.

Durov's arrest and the subsequent policy change highlight a pivotal moment for telegram, a platform that has faced criticism in the past for its hands-off stance on content moderation. While telegram has served as a vital communication tool in various conflicts, it has also been linked to illicit activities such as child exploitation and drug trafficking.

French authorities have accused telegram of failing to cooperate with investigations into criminal activities conducted through the platform, leading to legal repercussions for Durov. In response to these challenges, Durov acknowledged the need for improvement and pledged to address these issues internally.

telegram's ton Surpasses 1 Billion Total Transactions

Simultaneously, telegram's associated blockchain, The Open Network (ton), has achieved a significant milestone by surpassing 1 billion total transactions. This milestone was reached following a high-profile memecoin airdrop, which caused temporary network disruptions.

The transaction volume on ton has now exceeded 1.04 billion, with a notable increase in transactions in recent months. The adoption of the W5 smart wallet standard, developed in collaboration with Tonkeeper, has contributed to ton's continued growth by enabling gasless transactions on the blockchain.

Additionally, The Open Network Foundation's partnership with 1inch and Sign to launch the web3 startup accelerator Triangle has further bolstered ton's ecosystem. telegram's financial report for 2023 revealed a significant holding of $400 million in digital assets, reflecting the platform's commitment to the crypto space.

While telegram has witnessed a rise in premium users and digital asset-related revenue, it reported an operating loss of $108 million for the year. Notably, a substantial portion of the platform's revenue was derived from activities related to digital assets, including the sale of digital collectibles and an integrated wallet.
